Problem or question

01_blog_-_dale_free_esl_.jpgHow effective is my ESL teaching blog?
  • Effective for whom?
  • What needs to be retained? Improved? Ditched?
  • Is it a useful resource for target group?
  • Who is the target group exactly – students? Teachers? Both?

Course and learners

ESL Certificate Students Access 1, 2, 3. Adult ESL Learners mostly new to use of computers and the internet.

Classroom strategies

Use (the blog) as
  • a teaching prop in the classroom in conjunction with datashow
  • a planning/resource tool for the teacher
  • a tool for Assessing student aural skills
  • a self paced resource for the student
  • homework tool for the student
  • supplementary resource used within the classroom itself by teacher and student
  • a tool for promoting online and blended learning within the context of the curricula, and to enhance the teaching and learning of reading, writing, listening and speaking for adult ESL learners.

Connection with 2007 research

Web2.0 approach to teaching and learning that “average” teachers can replicate? You can be the judge of that

Data to gather

My own observations on effectiveness & changes in the blog content and various tools/sites /gadgets chosen over the last two terms - what worked well/ what fell flat or did not work well with students?
  • Focus Group A : students from Levels 1, 2, 3 who have used it - two profiles: computer savvy / new to computers
  • Focus Group B : ESL teachers (perhaps from ThinkWest Cluster)
  • Student feedback – break down into feedback about technologies used above / other teacher feedback – break down about technologies used above / use in their teaching situation.

Evaluation strategy

  • Survey – online / testimonials / interview of students and teachers (via Voxopop?)
  • Solicit feedback from within the ACEnetwork Ning / focus group discussion (online – maybe using Elluminate and/or fora in the Ning.
  • Maybe a face to face PD session-cum-focus group within ThinkWest.

Connection with one of the 4 R's

You can be judge of that.

  1. Production of Version 2 blog for 2010 Improvements to be made for Version 2 (2010) based on feedback/Selecting and mapping week to week lessons for 2010 version more carefully against ESL Frameworks competencies / critical appraisal of tools used and others that might be incorporated based on my own research of Web 2.0 this year.
  2. Article or presentation made in Ning / and my Reflective Teacher Blog “A Second Crack’.
